Is Botox Safe For Your Face?

Deciding whether to get Botox as a wrinkles treatment can bring many questions to the top of the mind. In this post, I will cover the questions everyone seems to ask, as well as my experience with the cosmetic.

My first experience with Botox was when I was 28 years old. I began to notice and feel deep lines in my forehead that seemed to remain even when my face was expressionless. These lines needed a wrinkles treatment and it seemed that topical skincare was not going to cut it. I began to research injectables. Here are some of the questions that I had.

Is Botox safe to use long term?

From all of my research, I was able to come to the conclusion that Botox is, in fact, is safe to use as a long term wrinkles treatment when used in the recommended small doses. Only 36 cases of adverse effects associated with cosmetic Botox use were reported to the FDA between 1989 and 2003. You can also stop using it at any time without your skin looking worse than it did before.

How does Botox work as a wrinkles treatment?

Botox is the med spa term for botulinum toxin. This toxin works to temporarily paralyze muscle activity. The injector will have you hold a mirror and ask you to make various facial expressions to determine where the treatment should be injected for the desired outcome.

What are possible side effects of Botox?

Pain, swelling or bruising at the injection site can occur. I have had all three but the symptoms are short-term and minimal in my experience. It is said that headache or flu-like symptoms are possible as well but not common. If these symptoms occur, consult with your physician.

How long does Botox take to work?

The wrinkles treatment process only takes a few minutes and does not require anesthesia. The results generally take three to seven days to take full effect. It is suggested to avoid alcohol starting at least one week before the procedure however, I have had a beverage within a week of being injected and I was just fine.

What should you do after Botox?

  • Don’t touch the injection site.
  • Do not consume large amounts of alcohol.
  • Refrain from strenuous physical activity.
  • Avoid all other facial treatments for 24 hours.
