While I have never actually heard of this tradition, I was super intrigued to learn that many people celebrate the Feast of the Seven Fishes on Christmas Eve. This year I got the chance to celebrate this Italian Christmas tradition with friends. Typically, the dinner includes seven different seafood dishes or one or two different types of fish prepared in seven different ways.
Despite its popularity among Americans, many Italians do not even know about the tradition of the Feast of 7 Fishes. Each of the 20 Italian regions have a different culinary tradition for Christmas Eve dinner.
For example, families in Piemonte celebrate with fresh pasta filled with meat. In Roma, families will enjoy fish-based soup. In Sardegna, they will not partake in Christmas Eve dinner without small semolina gnocchi usually served in a sauce with tuna and fresh cherry tomatoes.
This year we decided to try the tradition for ourselves but with a little American twist as my family LOVES Gorton’s fish products! As an appetizer we served Gorton’s Crunchy Breaded Fish Sticks. They are so delicious dipped in a hearty holiday cocktail sauce.
