Thank you First Alert for sponsoring this post. Don’t wait to replace!!
I am all about home decor and garden tips, but what about keeping your living place safe? Many of us forget the dangers of fire and carbon monoxide and it is a very serious and scary situation, especially when you have children living with you. In this post, I am sharing my tips for making your home safer.
5 Tips for a Safer Home
Check Your Smoke Alarms
Alarms do not last forever! That is why you should be sure to check the manufacture date on the back of your smoke alarm and keep a written record of when it will need to be replaced . Alarms should be replaced at least 10 years from the manufacture date. I would go one step further and set an alarm notification on your phone calendar so that you are notified when your alarms need to be replaced.

Fire Extinguisher
Having a fire extinguisher in your home is so important! Obviously, no one plans for a fire, but if the unexpected happens, a fire extinguisher is a great first line of defense to have. Keep fire extinguishers on every level of your home, plus in common areas like the kitchen and garage. Often times fires can block exit points. If you have a few fire extinguishers handy, you can more easily navigate your way to safety.
Install Combination Smoke and CO Alarms
Fire is a huge threat for a family, but another that is equally as scary is carbon monoxide. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, tasteless and invisible gas that can only be detected with a CO alarm.. Many families have lost their lives due to this silent killer. You should always be monitoring your home against carbon monoxide leaks. We have chosen the First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm for our home. This alarm provides 2-in-1 protection against both smoke and carbon monoxide.

Proper Placement of Smoke Detectors
You should install smoke and carbon monoxide alarms on every level and in every bedroom of your home to help be alerted to a fire or CO emergency. I have alarms just inside the door of every bedroom, as well as in the living room and in every hallway of my home.
Replace Batteries Every 6 Months
With most alarms, you will need to replace your batteries every 6 months. I recommend that you set up an alert in your phone for battery replacement or use Daylight Saving Time as a reminder. However, with the First Alert 10-Year Sealed Battery Smoke & Carbon Monoxide Alarm, you will be provided with 10-years of protection as this device eliminates the need for battery replacements and annoying late-night battery chirps for the life of the alarm.
