My best friend asked me to be her MOH this September and she is taking full advantage of my creative tendencies! For her small-town country wedding, I made her and her fiancé a burlap wall plaque with her new last name initial (K for Kaim) with a little inspiration from Pinterest. It was relatively easy to make and I have enough leftover materials to make many more burlap creations, including monogrammed corn hole bags for her outdoor game (stay tuned for those!)
What You’ll Need:
12 in x 12 in sheet scrapbook paper
12 in x 12 in canvas (or burlap board if you can find it!)
Burlap (if you went with canvas)
Burlap ribbon with wire 2 wooden cutouts (found at Michael’s and used a 50% off coupon found online at retailmenot.com)
Wooden Initial
Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
Mod Podge
Foam Paint Brush
Scissors
Pencil
The Initial Plaque
Step 1: If you’re like me and had trouble finding a burlap board, you have to start by covering your canvas in burlap (otherwise start with step 2.)
Do this by cutting the burlap about 1 inch taller and wider than your canvas (about 14 in x 14 in), plugging in your hot glue gun and using your scissors to clip off all 4 corners (leaving you with 4 small triangles.)
Lay your canvas face down on top of your burlap square and firmly pull and secure each of the 4 sides over and glue them in place over the wooden frame as pictured below.
Step 2:Trace out the shape of wooden plaque you selected onto your 12 inch square scrapbook paper and carefully cut it out with scissors.
Step 3: Use your foam brush to paint a thin layer of Mod Podge onto the wood and place the paper cutout over it to adhere it. Rub your hands over the paper to remove any air bubbles and allow 15 minutes to dry.
Step 4: Once dry, paint another layer of Mod Podge over the paper to deal it and allow 15 minutes to dry. Although the Mod Podge goes on white, it will dry clear.
Repeat this step and be sure to allow a 15 minute dry between every layer. You will end up with a shiny, glossy shape that looks like you painted it on.
Step 5: Now all that’s left is layering and hot gluing all your pieces onto your burlap canvas, starting with your wooden plaque.
And that’s it! You’ve done it! You created a beautiful piece of decor for both the wedding and the newlyweds home! What a beautiful and heartfelt gift!?
