Nestled along the Arkansas River at roughly 5,350 ft elevation, Cañon City is known as Colorado’s “Climate Capital” — boasting mild weather, dramatic scenery, and a fun‑packed lineup of outdoor adventures and local eats. Whether you’re craving high‑octane thrills or relaxed scenic tours, here’s how to spend an unforgettable weekend in this western gem.
Before we dive in, here is a video overview of our weekend in Cañon City Colorado!
Friday Night Arrival & First Impressions
Arrive in Cañon City in the evening and settle into a local cozy lodging near the Royal Gorge region. Many cabins and inns provide easy access to the Gorge and nearby attractions — call it base camp for the weekend.
If you’re looking for the perfect place to stay during your weekend in Cañon City, the Royal Gorge Riverside Yurts offer a cozy, scenic, and uniquely glamping‑style retreat that pairs beautifully with the area’s adventure offerings. Set right along the Arkansas River at Royal Gorge Adventure Beach, these 20‑foot diameter yurts feature a comfortable queen bed on the main level and another in a loft—each sleeping up to four guests with room to stretch out and relax.

These yurts come equipped with thoughtful amenities: each includes its own outdoor patio, deluxe propane fire pit, BBQ grill and open‑air kitchen setup (be sure to bring your own cookware and K‑cups for the provided Keurig), seating, and even games like cornhole or horseshoes on your private “mini beach” area. With clean restrooms and showers just 100 yards away and infrared heaters inside to keep you toasty on cool nights, they strike the perfect balance between rustic charm and comfort.
Dinner | Cañon City Restaurants
You can always grill out at the Yurt, but if you are tired from traveling a just want to enjoy a meal made for you, Main Street is the place to go. The Main Street area of Cañon City feels like you have stepped back in time. We loved hanging at some of the local restaurants after our day explorations. Some of our favorites are:
- Fremont Provisions: Serving scratch‑made comfort food with Colorado flair—a great spot for hearty dishes and local ingredients.
- Bobby’s Grotto: A beloved local spot offering wings, burgers and pub fare in a cozy atmosphere. They are also attached to DiRito’s Italian Restaurant so you can get the best of both worlds!
- Whitewater Rafting Bar & Grill: Located riverside near the rafting outfitter, this casual bar & grill is ideal for unwinding over hearty fare and cold drinks after a high‑energy day. This one isn’t on Main Street but it is only a 10 minute drive and the fun, interactive outside atmosphere is so much fun!
Saturday: Water, Rails & Dinner
Royal Gorge Rafting (Half‑Day or Full‑Day)
On Saturday morning, kick things off with Royal Gorge raft trips down the Arkansas River — these are class III–IV (and V at high water), delivering spectacular rapids framed by canyon walls and panoramic views.

- The half‑day trip spans ~10 miles and typically lasts about 3 hours—ideal for fitting into a busy day.
- The full‑day trip includes ~10 miles of calmer Class II–IV rafting followed by riverside lunch, then more intense whitewater in the Gorge—about 6 hours total. Lunch is included.

Having a great guide makes all the difference during your white water rafting journey. Joey from Royal River Rafting was our guide and he was absolutely fantastic! During your trip you’ll float beneath the Royal Gorge Bridge itself, with guides leading you through rapids like Sunshine Falls, Sledgehammer, the Narrows, Corkscrew and more.
After your rafting adventure, head back to town to refresh.
Evening: Railroad Dinner & Lights
Step into the night aboard the Royal Gorge Laser Light Show Dinner Train, Colorado’s most electrifying evening adventure. Departing at 7:00 p.m., right around sunset, this two‑hour journey blends music, motion, and light. Begin at the historic Santa Fe Depot, shop in the Trackside Mercantile or grab a pre-ride cocktail at the Caboose Café, then board a beautifully restored Vista Dome, Deluxe, or Coach railcar for stunning canyon views as you wind through the Royal Gorge.

Once aboard, order a grill‑style entrée or full dinner from the 403 Grill Menu, paired with craft cocktails, beer, or wine—service remains available throughout the night. As twilight deepens, the train transitions into a full-on open-air dance party, with high-voltage laser light projections choreographed to music such as The Weeknd, U2, Avicii and Tame Impala — bathing the sheer granite canyon walls in immersive colors and rhythm. Guests can dance under the stars on the open-air car, or enjoy the show in-seat while savoring drinks and views. Late-night stops at Trackside Mercantile let you snag souvenirs before departure.

Pricing is tiered by class: Coach Class from ~$114, Deluxe from ~$134, and Vista Dome from ~$144 per adult—children receive discounted fares, and infants lap‑rides are complimentary. Food and drinks are an add‑on, and fare seating groups of four means solo or pair travelers may share tables.
I did get some of my favorite parts of the Laser Show on video for you below.
Alternate Saturday Itinerary | Royal Gorge Scenic Railroad – Day Tour
If white water rafting isn’t your thing, you could always enjoy a Royal Gorge scenic train ride by day. Expect a roughly two‑hour ride through the heart of the Royal Gorge—clinging to canyon walls, passing the iconic hanging bridge section, and offering stunning Colorado vistas. Enjoy gourmet lunch or snacks aboard, local wines and microbrews all served with top‑notch service.
After your train tour, hop off and explore the local shops of Cañon City’s Main Street and pop in to one of the recommended restaurants for dinner.
Sunday: Jeep Tour & Bridge Experience
Colorado Jeep Tour through the Royal Gorge Region
Start your Sunday with a jeep tour – Colorado Jeep Tours offers half‑day journeys that traverse rugged terrain, cross the Royal Gorge Bridge (nearly 1,000 ft above the river), and climb Fremont Peak for panoramic views. We also got to see authentic dinosaur footprints and Colorado wildlife, while our guide shared geology and regional history.

These tours are perfect for photographers or nature lovers seeking insight and accessibility beyond a standard trail.
Royal Gorge Bridge & Park
After your Jeep adventure, head to Royal Gorge Bridge & Park itself—home to the highest suspension bridge in America (955 ft above the river). Walk across the bridge, ride the aerial gondola, test your nerves on the Skycoaster, or visit Tommy Knocker Playland if you’re traveling with kids.
General Admission gives you access to rides, exhibits and unlimited gondola crossings. Wander the park, take in museum displays, and absorb the sweeping views of the gorge and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.
Lunch or Early Dinner
For mid‑day eats, consider returning to one of the local eateries you missed the night before, or opt for a casual bite at the Whitewater Bar & Grill if you want burgers with a river view before hitting the road.
