Posing for Photos + Tips for Taking Professional-Looking Photos

Did you know, according to a recent survey, 60% of people experience happiness when scrolling through their phone photos? It no wonder so many people are taking the time learn how to upgrade their photo game. In the age of social media and digital content, having the ability to take professional-looking photos with your iPhone is a valuable skill. Whether you’re a budding photographer, a business owner, or simply someone who loves capturing life’s moments, these tips will help you elevate your photography game using just your iPhone.

iPhone Camera Accessories

Many people are shocked when I tell them that I take all of my own photos for my brand collaborations and social. “How do you take the photo from so far away of yourself?” people ask. Well it’s much simpler than you think. It is all in the equipment.

I use two types of tripods, a traditional tripod and a tripod with a bendable arm. The traditional tripod is great for everyday photos while the tripod with a bendable stand is good for photoing down on my hands while doing an activity, such as cooking or crafts. To shoot pictures of myself from a distance, I use a Bluetooth photo phone remote. This remote is a MUST for taking photos while not holding your phone.

Whenever possible, use natural light to illuminate your subject. Early morning and late afternoon are ideal times for soft, warm lighting. Avoid direct sunlight, which can create harsh shadows. When natural light isn’t available, lighting equipment comes in handy. I love using the selfie light for taking selfies and a ring light for makeup photos and videos.

Posing for Photos

A photographer friend of mine told me all about the power of angles when it comes to posing. The more you can create angles with your body, specifically triangles, the better your pose will photograph. Here are a few tips for striking the perfect pose:

Use Angles to Your Advantage

Tip: Avoid standing or sitting straight on to the camera. Instead, angle your body slightly to the side. This can create a slimmer, more dynamic appearance.

  • Why it works: Angling your body adds depth and dimension, making the pose look more natural and less flat.
  • How to do it: Stand with one foot slightly in front of the other and turn your shoulders slightly towards the camera.

Mind Your Posture

Tip: Stand or sit up straight with your shoulders back. Good posture can make a big difference in how confident and composed you look.

  • Why it works: Good posture elongates the body and enhances your overall appearance.
  • How to do it: Imagine a string pulling you up from the top of your head, and roll your shoulders back gently.

Use Your Hands Creatively

Tip: Avoid letting your hands hang limply by your sides. Instead, use them to create interesting shapes and lines.

  • Why it works: Hands can add expression and dynamism to a pose when used thoughtfully.
  • How to do it: Place a hand on your hip, gently touch your face, or play with your hair. Avoid clenching your fists or hiding your hands.

Find Your Best Side

Tip: Most people have a “good side” that they prefer in photos. Take some time to figure out which side you like best.

  • Why it works: Highlighting your best features can make you feel more confident and result in better photos.
  • How to do it: Experiment with different angles and sides to see which one you prefer. Once you find it, use that side more often in your poses.

Relax and Be Natural

Tip: Tension can show up in photos, so it’s important to stay relaxed. Take a deep breath, shake out any tension, and try to be yourself.

  • Why it works: Natural, relaxed poses often look more genuine and appealing.
  • How to do it: Engage in a conversation, laugh, or think of something that makes you happy. Avoid forcing a smile or pose.

Bonus Tip: Practice Makes Perfect

Tip: Spend some time practicing different poses in front of a mirror. This can help you become more aware of your body and what poses look best on you.

  • Why it works: Familiarity with your own movements and angles can boost your confidence in front of the camera.
  • How to do it: Try different poses, facial expressions, and angles to see what works best for you. Take note of poses that make you feel good and look flattering.

Use the Camera Grid Feature

The grid feature helps you follow the rule of thirds, a fundamental photography principle that can make your photos more balanced and visually appealing. To enable the grid, go to Settings > Camera > Grid and toggle it on.

How to Use the Rule of Thirds

  1. Enable the Grid: Most cameras, including iPhones, have a grid option in the settings. Turning on the grid helps you visualize the rule of thirds while composing your shot.
  2. Position Key Elements: Place the most important parts of your photo along the grid lines or at their intersections. These points are known as “power points” or “crash points” and are naturally where the viewer’s eyes are drawn.
  3. Align Horizons and Verticals: For landscapes, align the horizon with one of the horizontal lines rather than placing it in the center of the frame. For portraits or objects, place them along one of the vertical lines to create a more dynamic composition.

Adjust Exposure Manually

While the iPhone’s camera does a great job of automatically adjusting exposure, sometimes you’ll want more control. Tap on the screen to focus, then swipe up or down to adjust the exposure. This will help you avoid overly bright or dark images.

Utilize Portrait Mode

For stunning portraits with a professional look, use the iPhone’s Portrait mode. This feature creates a depth-of-field effect that blurs the background and keeps the subject in sharp focus. Experiment with different Portrait mode settings to achieve the best results.

Experiment with Angles and Perspectives

Don’t be afraid to get creative with your shots. Try different angles and perspectives to add interest to your photos. Get low to the ground, shoot from above, or try capturing your subject from the side.

Edit and Organize Your Photos

Even the best photographers edit their photos. Use apps like Adobe Lightroom, VSCO, or even the built-in Photos app to tweak your images. Adjust brightness, contrast, saturation, and sharpness to enhance your photos and give them a polished look.

Organization is also key when you capture loads of content with your iPhone. I use the Amazon Photos app (which is free for all and offers free, unlimited storage for Amazon Prime members) to categorize and store all of my photos.

Avoid Digital Zoom

Digital zoom can degrade the quality of your photos. Instead, use your feet to get closer to your subject or crop your photo later. If you need to zoom in, consider using the iPhone’s optical zoom (available on models with dual or triple cameras).

Keep Your Composition Simple

Less is often more in photography. Avoid cluttered backgrounds and focus on one or two main elements in your photo. Simple compositions are more impactful and easier for the viewer to understand.

With these tips, you can take professional-looking photos with your iPhone that are sure to impress. Remember, practice makes perfect. Keep experimenting, learning, and refining your skills, and soon you’ll be capturing stunning images with ease.
