I have been checking off lots of adventures through Europe which means I have become a master at packing for long distance travel. It wasn’t until my trip to France where they lost my luggage with all of my hygiene and makeup products that I began packing more strategically. After this trip, I went to Ulta and Sephora to pick up my entire makeup routine and create the perfect makeup kit for travel using all mini products. In this post, I am sharing my top mini makeup picks, makeup bags for traveling, travel makeup brushes and more!

Makeup Kit for Travel
When it comes to creating the perfect makeup kit for travel, it is all in the mini makeup products. Of course, not all of our favorite products come in mini form but I assure you, I have tried and tested dozens of brands and I am sharing the best formulas in mini makeup form so that you can put together your salon quality makeup kit for travel. If you want to check out my short tutorial video below to get an idea of the colors I chose for my kit, go for it. I have linked all of the products I use in this video below!

Face Makeup
I was amazed to find my favorite Fenty Match Stix contour in mini makeup form at the Ulta inside of Target.. When it came to foundation and concealer, I had to play around at the testing stations at Ulta. Here are the face makeup items I decided to add to my makeup kit for travel.
I normally use Tarte shape tape for concealer and did find that one in a mini but not in the creamy form so I decided to go with Fenty Snackz concealer which I believe is only available at the Ulta inside of Target at the moment. I did find the Bare Minerals Complexion Rescue Tinted Moisturizer in a mini at the main Ulta shop. This was a new product for me and I have to say, it covers beautifully while not being too much.

Cheek Makeup
So I went with two blushes, mainly because I could only find a mini of my favorite cheek highlighter in a gift set with a mini blush and I really wanted my favorite Nars Orgasm Blush in mini form. I am very pleased with the liquid blush that came in the Charlotte Tilbury Mini Pillow Talk Cheek Set. While there are lots of Charlotte Tilbury minis at Ulta, I found this little set at the Sephora inside of Kohls.
Eyeshadow Makeup
I went completely new when it came to shadow combos because I couldn’t find my usual Tarte Maneater palette in a mini. After testing lots of minis, I went with the Natasha Denona Mini Biba Eyeshadow Palette. Loved the unique colors in this set. I also tried out the Tarte Tubing Mascara and was very pleased with the elongating look. The Anastasia Beverly Hills Mini Brow Wiz in Taupe was also added to my travel makeup kit!
As for the e.l.f. Liquid waterproof eyeliner, it isn’t technically a mini but it fits in my tiny makeup bag so it works for travel makeup.
Nude Lipstick Products
I love a great nude lipstick and was able to find my lipstick in a mini but not the liner. Like my e.l.f. Waterproof eyeliner, the lipliner I chose easily fits in my mini makeup bag. Here are the two products I went with for a matte nude lipstick look.

Makeup Bags for Traveling
Since you have an entire makeup line of mini makeup for traveling, you won’t need a large makeup bag. I love these tiny little makeup bags which take up hardly any room in your carry on, making them the best makeup bags for traveling. By the way, waterproof or spill-resistant materials are a must to prevent leaks from ruining your luggage.
Travel Makeup Brushes
Choosing the right travel makeup brushes can make your packing more efficient without sacrificing your beauty routine. Opt for travel-sized brushes with protective caps or cases to keep the bristles clean and intact. Multi-functional brushes, like a dual-ended foundation and concealer brush, save space while maximizing utility. Synthetic bristles are a great option for travel since they dry quickly after cleaning and are less prone to damage. I love the brush and mirror travel set I found on Amazon. Don’t forget to pack a mini brush cleaner to maintain hygiene while you’re away. The right set of travel makeup brushes will ensure flawless application wherever you go.
How To Pack Makeup For Travel
Packing makeup for travel doesn’t have to mean sacrificing your routine or overstuffing your cosmetic bag. With a little strategy, you can bring your favorite beauty products without the stress of spills, breakage, or TSA surprises. The goal is to pack smart, minimize bulk, and protect your products so they arrive perfect for traveling.
Choose Multi-Use Products
When space is limited, multi-use beauty products are your best friend. Think cream blush that doubles as lipstick, bronzer that can act as eyeshadow, or tinted moisturizer with SPF. Fewer products mean less weight and more room for your other travel essentials.
Use Travel-Size Containers
Even if you prefer full sizes at home, decanting foundations, serums, and setting sprays into travel containers saves space and keeps you TSA-compliant. Look for leak-proof silicone bottles specifically made for travel beauty.
Protect Powders From Breaking
Slip a cotton pad inside your compact before closing it. This adds cushioning and prevents pressed powders from cracking during turbulence or movement inside your luggage.
Separate Liquids From Powders
Keep liquids in a clear pouch and powders in a separate cosmetic bag. This prevents spills from ruining your entire makeup collection.
Pack Makeup In The Center Of Your Bag
If you’re checking luggage, place your makeup bag in the center of your suitcase surrounded by soft items like clothing. This protects your beauty products from impact.
Bring A Small Touch-Up Kit In Your Personal Item
I always keep a mini pouch in my carry-on with concealer, lip color, mascara, and blotting papers. It’s perfect for traveling and refreshing your look before landing.
Use A Structured Cosmetic Organizer
A bag organizer insert with compartments keeps brushes, palettes, and smaller items from shifting. It also makes unpacking effortless when you arrive.

Can You Bring Makeup On A Plane?
Yes, you can absolutely bring makeup on a plane. However, TSA rules apply to certain types of products. Powders are generally unrestricted, while liquids, creams, gels, and pastes must follow the 3-1-1 liquid rule in carry-on luggage.
Here’s what to keep in mind:
Follow The 3-1-1 Liquid Rule
Liquids, gels, and creams must be in containers 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less and fit into one quart-sized clear bag. This includes foundation, liquid highlighter, mascara, lip gloss, and cream beauty products.
Solid Makeup Is Easier
Powder foundation, powder blush, eyeshadow palettes, and solid lipsticks are typically not subject to liquid limits. If you’re unsure, choosing solid formulas makes security much simpler.
Full Sizes Go In Checked Bags
If you want to bring full sizes of your favorite beauty products, pack them in your checked luggage instead of your carry-on.
Keep Liquids Accessible
Place your quart-sized bag at the top of your carry-on so you can easily remove it during airport security screening.
Can I Bring Makeup In My Carry On?
Yes, you can bring makeup in your carry on, but it must comply with TSA guidelines if it falls under liquids or creams. Planning ahead ensures a smooth airport experience and protects your travel beauty routine.
Here are some smart carry-on tips:
Downsize Your Routine
Stick to essentials only. Focus on complexion products, mascara, brow gel, and one versatile lip color.
Choose Travel-Specific Versions
Many brands now offer mini versions that are perfect for traveling and eliminate the need to transfer products into containers.
Avoid Overpacking Brushes
Bring only 2–3 versatile brushes instead of your entire collection. A dual-ended brush is a great space saver.
Use Leak-Proof Bags
Even within your quart-sized pouch, place especially liquid-heavy products in a small sealed bag for extra protection.
Consider Cream-to-Powder Formulas
These give the finish of powders but apply like creams, cutting down on the number of products you need.

Airport Makeup Rules
Airport makeup rules are straightforward once you understand the basics. Following them keeps your travel day stress-free and protects your beauty products.
Liquids Must Be 3.4 Oz Or Smaller
Any liquid, gel, cream, or paste must meet the TSA size requirement in carry-on luggage.
All Liquids Must Fit In One Quart Bag
You are allowed one clear, quart-sized bag per passenger for liquid items.
Powders Are Generally Allowed
Most powder makeup does not fall under liquid restrictions, though large quantities may be subject to additional screening.
Full Sizes Belong In Checked Luggage
If you prefer bringing full sizes, pack them securely in your checked suitcase to avoid TSA issues.
Sharp Tools Must Be TSA-Compliant
Tweezers are typically allowed, but larger sharp beauty tools may not be permitted in carry-on bags.
New Travel Beauty Tips Since My Last Update
Since publishing this post last time, I’ve learned a few more game-changing travel beauty tips:
- Bring a small microfiber cloth to clean brushes quickly while traveling.
- Switch to tubing mascara to avoid smudging during long-haul flights.
- Hydration mists are travel essentials for mid-flight skin refresh (just make sure they follow liquid rules).
- Use magnetic palette systems to customize and consolidate eyeshadows into one compact.
- Keep skincare minimal but strategic — cleanser, moisturizer, SPF, and one treatment product are usually enough for short trips.
Travel beauty doesn’t mean compromising your routine. With thoughtful packing and smart swaps, you can look polished, feel confident, and keep your beauty products protected no matter where you’re headed.
