The dreaded roadmap legs. Unfortunately some of us inherit them and some of us develop varicose and spider veins from increased body weight, trauma, and other external factors, either way, they look less than flattering, can be painful, and will make you ashamed of one of the most feminine parts of your body! For years I have hidden my legs under long dresses and pants but this summer, I am super proud of my lady limbs and will be adding shorts to my wardrobe to show them off!
It is hard to showcase my veins in the photos above. Not because they are not clearly visible, but because I have a camera that eliminates imperfections though light and I just couldn’t get a good detailed shot. The veins above are actually noticeably darker in person.

How do you get spider veins?
VaricoseĀ veinsĀ are large, raised, swollen blood vessels that twist and turn within the body and are most common in the leg. These veins can become so large that they can be seen through the skin.Ā Spider veins are developed much like varicose veins but insteadĀ are smaller. Both types of visible vein is due to venous insufficiency which occurs when valves in theĀ veinsĀ become damaged or weak. ThisĀ causes theĀ blood to poolĀ instead of traveling back up it’s path to the heart. These veins can also be caused byĀ issues unrelated to underlying venous insufficiency such as hormones, sun exposure, and even minor injuries.

Can I prevent Spider veins?
You can attempt to prevent spider veins by doing several things. Control your weight so that you are not placing too much bodily pressure on your legs. Exercise regularly to improve leg and vein strength as well as to encourage circulation through the limbs. Try not to cross your legs when resting and whenever convenient, elevate your legs. Of course, for some of us, the problem is purely hereditary and while prevention can help, there is no amount of prep we can do to prevent the problem. Lucky for us, with the development of certain medical spa technologies, we can greatly minimize or banish these annoying veins completely!
