How to Choose Gym Leggings: 6 Features That Make All the Difference

When it comes to workout gear for women, gym leggings have become a sort of non-negotiable staple. Head into any gym, fitness class or training studio, and it becomes clear that leggings are the go-to choice for women of all different fitness levels.

At first glance, most gym leggings for women seem pretty similar. They’re all pretty standard, stretchy fabric and sleek design. But as soon as you put them on and get moving, the differences become pretty clear. You find yourself constantly having to tug the waistband back up, dealing with fabric that gets all see-through during squats, seams digging into your skin, and they just don’t seem to breathe very well, leaving you feeling all sweaty and miserable. These are just a few of the issues you run into when you settle for low-quality leggings.

Choosing the right gym leggings for women is about a lot more than just picking a style or a colour you like. You need to get a handle on the features that really matter and what you need in a pair. And once you do, you can find a pair that feels comfy, performs well and actually makes you feel good about yourself.

Material

The material your gym leggings are made from determines a lot more than just how they feel – it determines how well they perform and how long they’ll last too.

Different materials are made to suit different types of training and personal preferences. So, for example, if you are just doing everyday stuff, you might want leggings that are made of lightweight nylon-elastane blends that have a smooth feel and let you move freely. But if you are doing serious training, then you might want something a bit more substantial with a bit more compression to help out.

We also have a growing range of recycled polyester blends that are a bit more eco-friendly without sacrificing durability or flexibility. And then there are ribbed fabrics that use a textured knit construction to give you a bit more style and a bit more fit – it feels like they are fitted a bit more snugly to your body.

Regular Scrunch or Invisible Scrunch

Scrunch detailing is really taken off in activewear because it gives the glutes a nice boost. But not all scrunch leggings are created equal.

Regular scrunch leggings have a seam or gathering detail at the back that’s pretty visible. It’s a bit of a statement piece – designed to create a lifted, curvy look. Loads of women love this style because it gives a nice contouring effect and really defines the glute area, especially during lower body workouts. Still, the stitching and ruching can be a bit too bold for everyday wear, and some women might prefer something a bit more low-key.

On the other hand, invisible scrunch leggings are designed to give you the same sculpting effect without that obvious gathered seam. Instead of a visible scrunch line, the shaping’s built into the seam and the fabric tension. That results in a smoother, more seamless finish that still accentuates natural curves. Invisible scrunch styles are often the go-to choice for those who want a flattering fit without that obvious ‘scrunch’ detail.

High Rise or Mid Rise

High-rise and mid-rise legging styles might look similar at first, but they have a totally different feel when you’re moving.

High-rise leggings sit right above your natural waistline, giving you extra coverage around your stomach and lower back. This is a popular choice with women who want a bit more support and that secure ‘held in’ feel during workouts. They also help create a smooth silhouette and stay in place a lot easier during exercises like squats, running or HIIT sessions, where your leggings can sometimes slip down.

Mid-rise leggings, on the other hand, sit a bit lower on the waist, usually around or just below your belly button. This style gives a lighter, more relaxed feel and suits those who don’t like high waistbands sitting too close to their torso. While they still give support, they tend to feel less compressive and can be more comfortable for lower-intensity workouts or just everyday wear.

Ankle Length or Full Length

Ankle-length leggings are designed to finish right at or just above your ankle. It’s the most common style in activewear today because it gives a clean, streamlined look while still letting you move freely. They’re perfect for year-round training and work especially well in indoor gym settings, where you want a lightweight feel without any extra fabric getting in the way. Ankle-length leggings also pair easily with all sorts of trainers, making them a super versatile option for everyday wear.

Full-length leggings extend right down to your ankle with full coverage of the legs. This style is often preferred in cooler weather or by those who like a bit more coverage, support and a warmer sensation during workouts. The extra fabric can give a slightly warmer feel and a more secure fit, especially during outdoor training or when the gym’s a bit chilly.

Pockets

Pockets aren’t a must-have for everyone, but they do add an extra bit of convenience that a lot of women find super useful.

You’ll find some activewear leggings with tiny side pockets tucked away right down the leg. They’re so flat you won’t even notice they’re there – perfect for carrying your phone, keys or gym membership card without having to keep stopping to get them out of your bag. These are especially a godsend for anyone who runs or does a bunch of gym work where you need to keep your hands free. The good news is the pockets are designed to stay put, so your stuff doesn’t get jostled around as you move.

Other leggings might have small pockets hidden away in the waistband. These give a super-minimal look but are still handy for chucking in your phone or some cash. Ideal for anyone who likes a sleek, streamlined look but still wants to be practical.

Colour

Colour is a pretty instant giveaway about a pair of leggings – and it can also affect how they look and feel once on. Lighter shades tend to make the fit feel more obvious, which can draw attention to how you look in them, so it’s really important to get the sizing right with these, and take a good look at the fabric in some decent lighting before you buy – really thin materials can look a bit dodgy when they get stretched or moved.

But with darker colours it’s the opposite – they tend to skim over the body a bit more, creating a smoother, more streamlined look. Dark colours are a top choice for gym wear because they help to hide any little imperfections and are super easy to style up for whatever workout or activity you’re doing.
