Always find yourself perplexed when it comes to outfit planning? I know the feeling all too well, that’s why I decided to build a capsule wardrobe with classic, yet show-stopping quality pieces that will never have me guessing when it comes to my daily outfit selection. In this post, I will share all you need to know about building the perfect minimalist wardrobe and also share my personal capsule wardrobe shopping list so that you can begin building your very own capsule wardrobe.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
A capsule wardrobe is a collection of essential fashion pieces that can be mixed and matched over time to create multiple looks. This wardrobe generally only contains up to 30 pieces and is paired with statement shoes, jewelry, scarves, or handbags for added flare.
Before Building Your Wardrobe…
You need to choose your wardrobe’s color scheme. For example, I like black, white, nude, and neutral tones when it comes to fashion, therefore most of my fashion items are from this color line up. If you are in to the same color scheme as me, I have recommended some great items to get you started on building your wardrobe at the bottom of this post.
Classic Pieces You Can Build Upon
Below I am sharing my top favorite pieces in my capsule wardrobe, but keep in mind, these are just a few of my favorites. For a complete list of items to include in your capsule wardrobe, get my Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe Shopping Guide & Checklist by clicking the link.
Bodysuits are all the rage, but if you are like me, you feel a bit uncomfortable hitting the town with a spandex or stretchy, fitted top. While I sometimes feel confident enough to rock the bodysuit solo with shorts, I mainly use my bodysuit as a layering piece under cropped tops or business blazers. Try a black turtleneck bodysuit for added class.
Plain White T’s
Despite what you may have learned, t-shirts are not just for lounging or casual wear. I have 5 of the same Universal Threads, Target brand white t-shirts. They are only $8 a piece and I wear them with everything. A solid t-shirt can be easily dressed up with statement jewelry pieces or silk scarves. White is my go to, but your t-shirt doesn’t have to be white. Choose a solid color that fits your capsule wardrobe color theme.
Everyday Cotton Dress
A comfy, solid color cotton dress is perfect for when you have an evening event and no time to change in between your daily activities and and your evening outing. During the day, you can pair your dress with tennis shoes or flats for getting work done comfortably. When it comes time for your event or night out, pop on some heels and a few statement jewelry pieces for an instant evening look!
Faux Leather (or just black) Leggings
Ok, I have to admit, I have both faux leather and solid black leggings in my capsule wardrobe. I like to wear my faux leather leggings in the fall/winter for extra warmth and drama added into my look. I wear my thinner and equally fashionable seamless black leggings in the spring/summer. One of my go to looks is tucking my white tee shirt into my high waisted black leggings and popping on a cozy, neutral colored cardigan over top.
Solid Biking Shorts
Biking shorts? You may be wondering how biking shorts could possibly be an essential for a capsule wardrobe. If you want to wear a dress that is a little flowy and above the knee, biking shorts remove the fear of flash. You can dance the night away and not worry about your undergarments being exposed. I also like to wear biking shorts with a graphic tee, high pony in a scrunchie, and some cute kicks for a comfy, casual day look.

I love a great pair of black Nike tennis shoes, but when I am trying to go for a less sporty look and a more casual day vibe, white sneakers are great with denim and a solid t-shirt.
One of the ways I jazz up my minimalist look is by sporting some statement kicks. Kurt Geiger footwear is my absolute go to for pizzaz.
Silk Slip Dress
The perfect cut silk slip dress is super sexy and looks great on any body type. I pair mine with a blazer for a sophisticated look and sometimes will ditch the blazer, pull my hair up, and add a large statement necklace for dressier occasions.
These are just a few of my go to’s but there are several other items that one needs to complete a capsule wardrobe. Get the full Minimalist Capsule Wardrobe Shopping Guide & Checklist here.
