Middle Age Glow Up Challenge | Lifestyle Changes as I Approach 40.

For years, I thought a “glow up” was something reserved for your early 20s, a fresh haircut, a new wardrobe, maybe a better skincare routine. But as I approach 40, I’ve realized something powerful: this season of life deserves the most intentional glow up of all. Not one rooted in shrinking myself or chasing youth, but one grounded in health, confidence, clarity, and energy.

Middle Age Glow Up Challenge | Lifestyle Changes as I Approach 40.

Welcome to my Middle Age Glow Up Challenge — a deeply personal lifestyle shift focused on feeling vibrant from the inside out. This isn’t about perfection, extremes, or quick fixes. It’s about making sustainable lifestyle changes, understanding what my body actually needs, and committing to long-term wellness as I enter my next decade.

Middle Age Glow Up Challenge | Lifestyle Changes as I Approach 40.

If you’re navigating your late 30s or early 40s and feeling the subtle (or not-so-subtle) shifts — hormones, energy, metabolism, skin, mood — you are not alone. This glow up is for us.

What a Middle Age Glow Up Really Means

A midlife glow up isn’t about anti-aging, it’s about pro-aging well. For me, that meant letting go of the idea that I could keep doing what worked in my 20s and expecting the same results. My body is wiser now, but it’s also more sensitive. Sleep matters more. Stress hits harder. Food choices have consequences. Recovery takes longer.

This glow up is about:

  • Supporting hormone balance
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Increasing strength and energy
  • Improving gut health and digestion
  • Nourishing skin, hair, and nails from within
  • Creating routines that support my nervous system

In short: working with my body instead of fighting it.

The Wake-Up Call: Why I Knew Something Had to Change

In my late 30s, I started noticing changes I couldn’t ignore. Afternoon crashes. Stubborn bloating. Skin that looked dull no matter how good my skincare was. Hair thinning. Sleep that felt light and unrestorative. I still looked alright, but felt like a duller version of my youthful self. I didn’t feel like myself.

I realized I had been reactive instead of proactive with my health. Fixing symptoms instead of addressing root causes. That’s when I decided: I don’t want to enter my 40s depleted. I want to enter them glowing.

Learning What My Body Actually Needed

One of the biggest shifts in my Middle Age Glow Up Challenge was education. I stopped guessing and started learning. I decided to take the SuperPower App Test, which is a health test offering comprehensive, biannual blood diagnostics tracking on over 100 biomarkers to measure hormones, metabolism, inflammation, and heart health. It uses AI, wearable data, and a concierge medical team to provide personalized health plans, early risk detection, and actionable longevity insights. After getting my Superpower results, I began researching:

  • Hormonal changes in women approaching 40
  • The role of inflammation in aging and fatigue
  • Nutrient deficiencies common in midlife women
  • How stress and cortisol affect weight and skin
  • Why gut health impacts everything

I also worked with professionals and leaned into functional wellness, focusing on why my body was responding the way it was. That’s when supplements and peptides stopped feeling like random pills and started feeling like targeted support.

Thorne supplements

Supplements as Support, Not Shortcuts

Let’s be clear, supplements are not magic. They don’t replace real food, movement, or sleep. But when used intentionally, they can be powerful tools, especially in midlife.

Some of the areas I focused on:

  • Hormone support to help with estrogen fluctuations
  • Methylation and detox support to help my body process stress and inflammation since I found out through blood work that I have the MTHFR gene mutation
  • Gut health to reduce bloating and improve absorption
  • Skin, hair, and nail support from the inside out
  • Electrolytes and minerals to support energy and workouts

The biggest lesson? More is not better. Better is better. Quality, consistency, and personalization matter.

The Supplements Supporting My Middle Age Glow Up

One of the biggest mindset shifts in my glow up journey was understanding that supplements aren’t about “fixing” something that’s wrong, they’re about supporting what your body is navigating in this season of life. As hormones shift, inflammation increases, and nutrient needs change, targeted supplementation can make a meaningful difference. Here’s what I’m currently taking after speaking with my doctor, and why.

Progesterone

As women approach their late 30s and early 40s, progesterone is often the first hormone to decline. This imbalance can show up as poor sleep, anxiety, mood swings, weight changes, and irregular cycles. After reviewing my blood work, my doctor identified that I am in perimenopause and my progesterone levels were super low.

I take progesterone to:

  • Support hormonal balance
  • Improve sleep quality
  • Help regulate mood and nervous system responses
  • Counteract estrogen dominance

Balanced hormones are foundational to feeling calm, energized, and emotionally grounded, all essential for a true glow up.

Methylation Support Supplement

My doctor tested me for the MTHFR gene mutation, which is a mutation that affects methylation, my body doesn’t detoxify or process certain nutrients as efficiently as it should. Methylation impacts everything from hormone metabolism to inflammation and mental clarity.

  • Support detox pathways
  • Improve energy production
  • Assist hormone processing
  • Reduce inflammation at a cellular level

For midlife women, proper methylation becomes even more important as toxic load and stress accumulate over time.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is one of the most overlooked yet critical nutrients, especially for women. Since I don’t methylate properly, I struggle to maintain adequate active vitamin D levels which increases my risk for inflammation and disease. With the Metagentics Methylcare, I take Metagentics Vitamin D3 + K.

I take vitamin D to:

  • Support immune health
  • Improve mood and emotional resilience
  • Support bone density
  • Assist hormonal and metabolic function

Low vitamin D levels are extremely common and can quietly contribute to fatigue, low mood, and weakened immunity.

Omega-3 with CoQ10

This is one of my cornerstone supplements for inflammation, cardiovascular health, and energy. Omega-3s help reduce chronic inflammation, which is a major contributor to hormonal imbalance, joint pain, skin issues, and aging. CoQ10 supports mitochondrial function, meaning energy production at the cellular level. I Take Thorne Omega 3 with CoQ10.

I take this to:

  • Reduce inflammation
  • Support heart and cardiovascular health
  • Improve brain function and focus
  • Support skin health and elasticity
  • Boost cellular energy levels

As we age, natural CoQ10 levels decline, making this combination especially supportive in your late 30s and 40s.

Nutrafol

Hair changes are one of the most emotional (and frustrating) parts of midlife for many women. Shedding, thinning, and texture changes can feel sudden and alarming. I take Nutrafol Balance to help keep my hair growing healthy and full through my middle age and perimenopause.

Nutrafol supports:

  • Hair growth and thickness
  • Stress-related hair shedding
  • Hormonal hair changes
  • Overall hair strength and quality

It works from the inside out, addressing root causes rather than masking symptoms.

Thorne NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine)

NAC is a powerful antioxidant and one of the most effective supplements for supporting detoxification and inflammation control. NAC helps the body produce glutathione, often referred to as the master antioxidant, which plays a critical role in cellular repair and immune function. I take Thorne NAC.

I take NAC to:

  • Support glutathione production
  • Aid liver detoxification
  • Reduce oxidative stress
  • Support immune and respiratory health
  • Help manage inflammation

This has been especially important for overall resilience, recovery, and long-term health.

Why Supplements Are Part of My Glow Up — Not the Whole Story

Supplements are supportive tools, not shortcuts. They work best when paired with:

  • Quality sleep
  • Protein-rich, balanced meals
  • Strength training
  • Stress management
  • Consistency

The real glow up happens when you stop guessing and start listening to your body — then give it what it actually needs.

Lifestyle Changes That Made the Biggest Difference

My glow up didn’t come from one dramatic overhaul. It came from small, consistent lifestyle changes that added up.

1. Prioritizing Sleep Like It’s a Non-Negotiable

Sleep is now sacred. Better sleep improved my mood, skin, cravings, and focus almost immediately.

2. Strength Training Over Cardio Obsession

I stopped punishing my body with endless cardio and started lifting weights. Strength training has been a game-changer for metabolism, confidence, and body composition. I shared more in my post, “How to Prepare for Turning 40.”

3. Eating to Stabilize Blood Sugar

Protein-rich meals, fewer spikes, and more balanced plates helped eliminate crashes and cravings.

4. Reducing Inflammation (Without Being Extreme)

I focused on whole foods, hydration, and reducing ultra-processed foods — without demonizing anything.

5. Creating a Nervous-System-Friendly Routine

Less rushing. More intention. Morning light. Breathwork. Walking. Silence. These things matter more than we’re taught.

The Emotional Glow Up No One Talks About

Here’s the part people don’t always mention: midlife glow ups are emotional, too.

This season forced me to look at:

  • Where I was overgiving
  • Where I was ignoring my intuition
  • Where stress had become normalized
  • Where I was putting myself last

As I supported my physical health, my emotional clarity sharpened. I became more protective of my energy. More honest about my needs. Less willing to run on empty. That, in itself, is a glow up.

Glowing Up Before 40 Is an Act of Self-Respect

This challenge isn’t about fear of aging — it’s about respect for my future self.

I want to feel strong in my 40s.
I want clear skin because I’m nourished, not because I’m covering inflammation.
I want energy that lasts all day.
I want my hormones supported, not ignored.
I want to age with intention.

And most of all, I want other women to know: it’s not too late — and you’re not broken. Your body is simply asking for a different kind of care now.

Your Middle Age Glow Up Starts Now

If you’re reading this and feeling that quiet nudge — the one that says something needs to change — listen to it. Your Middle Age Glow Up Challenge doesn’t need to be loud, expensive, or overwhelming. It just needs to be intentional.

Start with curiosity.
Educate yourself.
Support your body.
Honor your energy.

Glowing up before 40 isn’t about becoming someone new.
It’s about finally becoming aligned with who you’re meant to be.

And that kind of glow? It only gets better with time.
