My Travel Skincare Routine: How I Keep My Skin Glowing After a Flight

There is something about stepping off a plane that can make your skin feel completely different than it did when you boarded. Between the dry cabin air, long travel days, disrupted routines, and constantly touching surfaces, flying can leave my skin feeling dehydrated, dull, and much more prone to breakouts.

Over time, I have realized that my travel skincare routine needs to begin before I ever get on the plane. Instead of waiting until I arrive at my destination to try to bring my skin back to life, I focus on hydration and skin prep before traveling and keep a few carefully chosen skincare products with me during the flight.

My goal is pretty simple: I want to get off the plane with skin that still looks fresh, clear, hydrated, and glowing. Here is the travel skincare routine that I use to help make that happen.

Why Does Flying Dry Out Your Skin?

If your skin feels noticeably drier after flying, there is a reason. Airplane cabins have very low humidity compared with the environment our skin is accustomed to on the ground. Spending several hours in that dry environment can leave skin feeling tight, dehydrated, and lackluster. And dehydration isn’t my only concern when I travel.

Think about everything you touch during a typical travel day, the airport security bins, your luggage, your phone, armrests, seat belts, tray tables, door handles, and countless other surfaces. Then think about how easy it is to absentmindedly touch your face.

For someone who is already conscious about keeping their skin clear, that combination makes me particularly careful about what I do before, during, and after a flight.

I don’t believe you need to bring your entire bathroom cabinet onto an airplane to take care of your skin. I would rather focus on a few strategic steps that help support hydration while also keeping my skin feeling clean and refreshed.

Here is what I do.

1. I Prep My Skin With a Hydrating AquaFirme Facial

One of my favorite things to do before a trip is schedule an AquaFirme facial. Rather than simply getting my regular treatment, I like having my Aquafirme facial, at McDonald Murrmann Skin and Laser, customized to focus heavily on hydration before I travel. This can include hydrating serums along with additions such as red light, vibrations, and ultrasound.

I think of this as giving my skin a head start. Instead of boarding the plane with skin that is already feeling a little dry or depleted, I want my complexion to feel as hydrated and refreshed as possible before being exposed to hours of dry cabin air.

I especially love the immediate glow that I get after an AquaFirme treatment. When I know I am going to be taking photos or heading straight into activities after arriving at my destination, having my skin looking fresh before the trip makes such a difference.

If you are scheduling any professional skincare treatment before traveling, talk with your provider about your skin and travel plans so they can customize your treatment appropriately.

2. I Start With Clean, Hydrated Skin

On travel day, I try not to overload my complexion. I want my skin clean, comfortable, and well hydrated before heading to the airport. Travel day isn’t necessarily the time when I want to experiment with a complicated new skincare routine or pile on a dozen different products. Instead, I focus on hydration and products that I already know work well with my skin.

If I am wearing makeup, I also tend to think in terms of keeping my complexion looking fresh rather than creating an extremely heavy base. The more comfortable my skin feels at the beginning of the day, the easier it is to maintain that fresh look throughout the trip.

3. Hydrinity Hyacyn Active Spray Is One of My Travel Essentials

One product I particularly like having with me while traveling is Hydrinity Hyacyn Active Spray. A facial mist is incredibly convenient when you’re traveling because you can quickly refresh your complexion without doing an entire skincare routine in an airplane bathroom.

I also love having something I can reach for throughout a long travel day when my skin starts feeling like it needs a refresh. For me, travel skincare isn’t only about what my skin looks like. It is also about maintaining that clean, refreshed feeling after hours of navigating airports and airplanes.

This is one of those products that is easy to work into my travel routine without making the routine feel complicated.

4. I Give My Under-Eyes Extra Attention

My under-eye area is one of the first places where I notice the effects of travel. Between early flights, late nights, disrupted sleep, and dry cabin air, the eye area can quickly start looking tired and dehydrated. One of my favorite travel beauty products for this is the Erno Laszlo Multi-Task Serum Eye Mask.

Eye masks are also incredibly easy to pack because they take up almost no room in your luggage or travel beauty bag. I like using them when my eye area needs an extra boost of hydration and I want to look more refreshed. They are especially nice to have when you have dinner, an event, sightseeing, or photos planned shortly after arriving.

It’s a small addition to my travel skincare routine, but it can make me feel considerably more put together after a long travel day.

5. I Try Not to Touch My Face

This sounds incredibly simple, but it may be one of the hardest travel skincare habits to follow. I try to be very conscious about touching my face when I am traveling.

Your hands come into contact with so many shared surfaces throughout an airport and airplane. It is easy to rest your chin on your hand, rub your eyes, or touch your face without realizing you’re doing it. Being more conscious of this habit is one of the simplest things I can do during a flight, particularly when I am trying to avoid arriving at my destination with a new breakout.

6. I Keep My In-Flight Routine Simple

You have probably seen elaborate airplane skincare routines involving multiple serums, sheet masks, creams, and beauty tools. Personally, I prefer simplicity.

The airplane itself isn’t necessarily where I want to perform a complete facial. Instead, I would rather prepare my skin properly beforehand, keep it comfortable during the flight, and do a more complete cleanse and skincare routine once I reach my destination. It also means I don’t have to fill my carry-on with a huge collection of skincare products.

7. I Cleanse My Skin When I Arrive

Once I reach my hotel or destination, one of the first things I want to do is cleanse my skin. After spending hours going through airports and sitting on an airplane, washing my face feels like a reset. From there, I can go into my normal evening skincare routine and focus again on hydration.

If my complexion is looking particularly tired, this is also a great time to use my Erno Laszlo eye masks and give my skin a little extra attention before heading out or going to bed.

What I Pack in My Travel Skincare Bag

I have learned that I am much more likely to maintain my skincare routine while traveling when I don’t overpack it. Instead of trying to recreate every single step of my routine, I prioritize the products I know I will actually use.

My travel skincare essentials generally center around a gentle cleanser, hydrating skincare, moisturizer, SPF, Hydrinity Hyacyn Active Spray, and my Erno Laszlo Multi-Task Serum Eye Masks.

Depending on the length of the trip, I may add a few other products from my regular routine, but hydration and keeping my skin feeling clean are always the priorities.

Don’t Forget About Your Skin on the Flight Home

This is something that is surprisingly easy to forget. We spend so much time preparing our skin for vacation that by the time the trip is ending, all of our routines have gone out the window. But your return flight exposes your skin to the same dry cabin environment as your first flight.

I try to continue my skincare habits throughout the trip rather than treating them as something I only do on departure day. That includes staying consistent with my skincare, keeping my skin hydrated, and packing my travel essentials somewhere I can easily reach them for the flight home.

A Good Travel Skincare Routine Starts Before the Airport

The biggest change I have made to my travel skincare routine is realizing that taking care of my skin while flying doesn’t begin once I am sitting in my airplane seat. For me, it starts beforehand.

Going into a trip with freshly treated, hydrated skin after an AquaFirme facial gives me a great starting point. From there, I keep things simple with a few travel-friendly products, including Hydrinity Hyacyn Active Spray and Erno Laszlo Multi-Task Serum Eye Masks, while being more mindful about touching my face and cleansing my skin once I arrive.

Flying may naturally leave skin feeling a little drier than usual, but I don’t want my complexion to look like it has been through an entire travel day.

With a little preparation and the right products, I can step off the plane feeling much more like myself—with skin that still looks fresh, hydrated, clear, and glowing.
