My friend said she drove this stretch more times than she could count. Gorgeous views, the Burj Al Arab just sitting there looking absurd and beautiful, and it was the perfect early-morning drive before the heat really kicked in.
Downtown & The Dubai Mall
Having the car means you can come and go whenever, park nearby, and not be stuck waiting around for a ride when you’re were ready to leave. Small thing, but it adds up over a week.
Hatta — The Mountain Day Trip
This is THE highlight. About 90 minutes outside the city, suddenly you go from skyscrapers to actual mountains and this gorgeous dam with turquoise water. You will probably never make it out to see it without your own car — it is not really a taxi kind of trip — I have a feeling this will be one of our favorite days of the entire vacation.
Tips If You’re Renting a Car in Dubai
- Book a few days ahead, especially if you’re traveling between October and April — that’s peak season and good cars go fast.
- Your regular driver’s license works fine for visitors — no special permit needed for a short trip.
- Download offline maps before you head out each day. Google Maps works great in Dubai but data can get pricey.
- Budget a little for tolls — nothing crazy, maybe AED 100-150 for a week of regular driving, but good to know it’s coming.
- Fuel is CHEAP, like genuinely shocking if you’re coming from the US. Fill up before you return it and you’ll be fine.
