Savoring Memphis: A Culinary Journey Through Three Local Gems

Memphis is known for its vibrant food scene, but sometimes the best culinary experiences are tucked away in the most unexpected places. On a recent adventure, I had the pleasure of dining at three local spots that truly stood out: The Kitchen Table in Arlington, TN, Amelia Gene’s in downtown Memphis, and Café Piazza in Collierville, TN. Each restaurant offered a unique twist on Southern hospitality and left me craving more. Here’s a peek into my delicious journey!

The Kitchen Table – Arlington, TN

Tucked away in the charming town of Arlington, The Kitchen Table is the kind of place that feels like home the moment you walk in. It’s the quintessential Southern kitchen, serving up a unique twist on southern comfort food that warms your soul. From the friendly staff to the cozy décor, everything about this spot screams “come on in and stay a while.”

I couldn’t resist starting with their fried green tomatoes, crispy on the outside and tangy on the inside, perfectly paired with a dollop of pimento cheese on top. The real star of the show, though, was the shrimp and grits where you will get several juicy shrimp on top of a grit cake, drizzled in a rich, savory gravy. It’s the kind of dish that transports you straight back to your grandmother’s kitchen, that is if she was a gourmet chef.

Amelia Gene’s – Downtown Memphis

Located in the heart of downtown Memphis, Amelia Gene’s is the epitome of cool. With its sleek, modern vibe and innovative menu, it’s a must-visit for anyone looking to experience the cutting edge of Memphis cuisine. This isn’t just a restaurant; it’s a full-on experience that tantalizes your taste buds from start to finish.

The hollandaise topped scallops caught my eye right away, and I knew I had to try them. Picture this: plump, juicy scallops nestled on top of a potato cake and topped with a creamy hollandaise sauce that adds just the right amount of flavor. It’s a classic dish with a contemporary twist.. And don’t even get me started on their dry aged steak and blackberry oysters. All of Amelia Gene’s dishes are as inventive as they are delicious, making Amelia Gene’s the perfect spot for a night out on the town. (Photos below: Commercial Appeal)

Café Piazza – Collierville, TN

Last but certainly not least, I made my way to Café Piazza in Collierville, TN. This quaint Italian eatery is a little slice of Italy right here in Tennessee. With its warm, inviting atmosphere and a menu brimming with authentic Italian dishes, Café Piazza is a true gem for anyone craving a taste of the Mediterranean.

I kicked things off with their caprese salad, a delightful mix of ripe tomatoes, fresh basil, and mozzarella topped perfectly with pesto and balsamic vinigarette. But the pièce de résistance was their Margherita pizza – thin, crispy crust topped with tangy tomato sauce, fresh mozzarella, and fragrant basil. It was simple, it was classic, and it was absolutely divine. Paired with a glass of red wine, it was the perfect way to end my culinary tour.

Each of these restaurants offers something special, whether you’re in the mood for comforting Southern classics, modern Memphis cuisine, or a little taste of Italy. So next time you’re in the Memphis area, be sure to give these spots a try – your taste buds will thank you!
