Smart Office Fashion Tips

I know it is freezing outside and hard to even think of wearing anything other than layers of sweaters, scarves, and cardigans, but many folks are just now getting back to work after an extended holiday break. With it officially being the New Year and everyone back in the boardroom, I thought it would be the perfect time to give a refresh on how to dress smart while back at the office.

Dressing appropriately for the office is important as it not only contributes to a professional and polished image, but studies have shown that when you feel like you look good, you are more confident, and when you are more confident, you are likely to be more productive.

In this post, I am not only sharing some top Smart Office Fashion tips, but I will also be showcasing some of my favorite office smart items from my Kohl’s try on haul this past weekend.

My Smart Office Fashion Tips

Know the Dress Code

Understand the dress code of your workplace. Different offices may have different expectations, ranging from casual to business casual to business formal. Refresh on your employee handbook and observe what the top performers are sporting to work.

Fit Matters

Ensure that your clothes fit well. Ill-fitting attire can give off an unprofessional vibe. Tailored clothing, even if it’s casual, looks more polished. If professionally tailored clothing is out of budget, just use Hollywood Fashion Tape for hemming up your pants or cuffing your sleeves.

Mix and Match

Build a versatile wardrobe with mix-and-match pieces. This way, you can create multiple outfits from a smaller number of items. I really love the black pants that I am wearing below because I can pair them with almost anything and the green top that I have tucked in is very long so it can be worn open as a long cardigan or even as a tunic with more fitted bottoms.

Comfort is Key

While looking professional is important, comfort is equally crucial. Make sure your clothing allows you to move comfortably throughout the day. Nothing is worse than an 8 hour work day spent in discomfort.

Be Mindful of Trends

While it’s okay to incorporate some current trends, avoid extreme or overly casual styles. Stick to timeless pieces that can be mixed with trendier items. I like to save the trends for my accessories. For example, a fun, silk, bold neck scarf looks great with a lower cut blouse or tied in your hair. I also like to change the buttons on my cuffs to colorful, eye catching jewels or vintage buttons. Also, with the house below, you can choose a professional cute with a cute twist. I love this “hearted” blouse.

Personal Expression

Depending on the workplace culture, you may have some room for personal expression. I love a work environment that celebrates and applauds individuality! Consider how you can subtly incorporate your personal style while still adhering to the dress code.

Appropriate Lengths

Skirts, dresses, and shorts should be of an appropriate length. Aim for knee-length area, either at knee- length, slightly above, or slightly below, especially in more formal environments. The Draper James Skirt below hits about an inch below my knee. I wasn’t a fan of this cut for my body shape but the skirt itself was super cute.

Remember that every workplace is unique, so it’s essential to observe the attire of your colleagues and adjust your wardrobe accordingly. These tips should help you strike a balance between professionalism and personal style in the office.
