Statement Investment Pieces That Improve With Age

If you’re looking for ways to store your wealth, then the modern age offers an unprecedented range of options. You might put your money into a mutual fund, or into a commodity like gold. You might look to buy shares in a business you care about, or even put your money into experimental modern digital assets, like Bitcoin.

On the other hand, you might look to invest in an item that will bring you personal pleasure, as well as holding on to its value over time. Stocking your wardrobe and dresser with high-quality items might actually be a frugal strategy – provided that you know what you’re looking for, and why.

What are some common investment pieces?

So, which kinds of pieces are good for investors? The answer will depend on whether you actually intend to wear the pieces in question. If you’re buying footwear, then it will retain its value only if it’s being kept in the box. Jewellery, by contrast, tends to be more hard-wearing – which is partly why wristwatches represent such a popular investment. Other items, like handbags, dresses, and coats, tend to fit somewhere between these two extremes.

Why do some pieces appreciate in value over time?

In some cases, wear and tear can drive the value of a piece down significantly over time. In other cases, the value of the item can actually be driven up by other forces.

If you have a strong understanding of the laws of supply and demand, then you might already know what to look for. Suppose that the work of an obscure designer suddenly becomes widely respected. This would cause that work to be in greater demand, which would push up the price. If the designer in question stops creating new items, then the supply of those items would necessarily be restricted – and this would push up the price, too.

There are a few things you can do to increase the value of your items. You might get them authenticated, so that you can demonstrate to would-be buyers that you aren’t offering a fake.

Why is it important to look after pieces of value?

Of course, the piece in question will also need to be kept in good condition. This means finding a safe place to store them. If you’ve invested thousands of pounds in jewellery, then you’ll need a safe box where they can be kept without the risk of suffering nicks and scratches. Most quality jewellery boxes are lined with silk or velvet for that reason. A safe might also protect your collection from burglars.

You should also invest in insurance that reflects the value of your collection. For smaller, low-value collections, your home insurance might be sufficient. As your collection grows and appreciates, however, the need for specialized insurance may become difficult to resist.
