Teal Hair DIY: How to Achieve and Maintain at Home

There are so many vivid hair colors to try. Your locks can be any shade, from neon green to bright purple. But to really stand out from the crowd, you can grab a bottle of teal hair dye from the local store or online. Then, even the most alternative people will gasp as you pass them on the street — teal is a unique color that’s bound to make everyone turn their heads.

Moreover, you can DIY it at home. Here’s how to turn yourself into a mermaid goddess without visiting the salon and make the color last longer.

Teal Hair DIY: How to Achieve and Maintain at Home

Dyeing Your Hair Teal

Although some bright shades can be applied to darker hair, teal might appear muted on dark brown and black hair. Your hair might glimmer with a blue shade in the sun, but it won’t be bright.

For a true teal, it’s recommended to lift your natural shade first. You’ll have to use bleach until you reach a light blonde. A strand test before full application can show how the formula appears on the current base and help avoid an unexpectedly blue or green result. Once your base is ready, proceed as follows:

  1. Grab Arctic Fox’s Aquamarine or Emerald Fortune, or mix your own teal shade in the bowl.
  2. Put on a pair of gloves.
  3. Make sure your hair is clean and dry.
  4. Part your hair and start applying the dye from the roots to the ends.
  5. Once the dye has evenly coated the strands, leave it on for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Rinse it off with cold or lukewarm water.

You might see some color wash out when you’re rinsing. This is a normal process, and your locks will still turn out vibrant. Now, dry your hair and style it however you prefer.

Maintaining Vibrant Teal

Dyeing your strands teal is not enough. Once the dye is rinsed out, you have to maintain your color to make sure it lasts longer. To do so, invest in suitable shampoo and conditioner designed for dyed strands. They usually don’t contain sulfates and other harmful chemicals to preserve the pigment without flushing it out.

Avoid hot water when washing your hair. Heat raises the cuticles and helps the color escape. The same goes for UV exposure and hot tools like curling irons, dryers, and straightening irons. If you absolutely need to use them, put some heat protection product on first.

Try to keep your teal hair out of the sea or pool. Salt and chlorine are generally harmful for any type of hair, but colorful locks may quickly become dull and lose brightness when affected. Put your hair up or use a cap when swimming.

Ready to Feel Like a Mermaid

Teal hair is a feature that will make you stand out in the crowd. It’s pretty easy and fast to DIY at home, but it requires regular care to keep the color looking fresh. To make it last longer, avoid excessive heat, salt water, and chlorine. Additionally, use color-safe shampoo and conditioner.
