When we planned our family trip to Williamsburg, I knew we wanted our boys to experience more than another vacation. We wanted them to walk away with stories, memories, and maybe even a new appreciation for the history that shaped our country. What I didn’t expect was how much all of us would fall in love with this remarkable town.
As America’s largest living history museum, Colonial Williamsburg isn’t simply a place to observe history—it’s a place to step inside it. Every street, building, and conversation feels like a window into the 18th century, making it one of the most immersive destinations we’ve ever visited.

Stay in the Heart of History at Colonial Williamsburg Resorts
One of the best decisions we made was staying at the Williamsburg Inn.
The Inn offers timeless elegance with exceptional service, but if you really want to immerse yourself in Williamsburg’s history, I highly recommend reserving one of the Colonial Houses.
These beautifully restored historic homes are scattered throughout the Historic Area, allowing guests to stay in buildings that have welcomed visitors for centuries while still enjoying modern comforts. Waking up each morning surrounded by cobblestone streets and colonial architecture made the entire experience feel even more authentic.
A Living Town, Not a Museum | Colonial WIlliamsburg Shops
What surprised me most about Colonial Williamsburg is that it doesn’t feel like a museum. It feels like an active colonial town.
Throughout the Historic Area, artisans continue practicing traditional trades exactly as they did more than 250 years ago. As you wander through town, you’ll see blacksmiths shaping glowing iron, cabinetmakers building furniture by hand, printers operating antique presses, weavers creating textiles, and silversmiths crafting beautiful pieces using centuries-old techniques.
Many of the items they create are available for purchase, making it one of the few places where your souvenirs are handcrafted using authentic historical methods rather than mass-produced.
History Comes to Life Around Every Corner | Colonial WIlliamsburg Re-Enactments
One of my favorite parts of our visit was how interactive everything felt.
Rather than simply reading plaques, we watched history unfold around us through costumed interpreters, military drills, courtroom reenactments, and lively conversations that invited visitors to participate.
The boys loved watching colonial soldiers march through town, while Greg and I appreciated hearing the stories behind the people who helped shape America’s future. It never felt like a history lesson. It felt like time travel.
Historic Colonial WIlliamsburg Buildings You Won’t Want to Miss
With nearly 90 original and reconstructed buildings throughout the Historic Area, it’s impossible to see everything in one day. These were some of our favorite stops.
Governor’s Palace
Once home to Virginia’s royal governors, the Governor’s Palace offers an incredible look at colonial wealth, politics, and architecture. Be sure to spend time exploring the formal gardens behind the palace—they’re just as impressive as the interior.
Capitol Building
Standing inside Virginia’s Capitol gave us a new appreciation for the conversations and debates that helped shape the early United States. It’s one thing to read about history, but another to stand where it actually happened.
Bruton Parish Church
Still an active Episcopal church today, Bruton Parish has welcomed worshippers since the early 1700s. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Patrick Henry all attended services here, making it one of the country’s most significant historic churches.
The Public Gaol
History takes on a darker tone inside Williamsburg’s historic jail. One of the most fascinating stories involves members of Blackbeard’s pirate crew, who were imprisoned here after the Battle of Ocracoke before facing trial and execution.
It’s a stop that older kids and history lovers will especially enjoy.
Things To Do in Colonial WIlliamsburg | Take the Ghost Tour After Dark
As much as I loved exploring Williamsburg during the day, the atmosphere completely changes once the sun goes down.
One of the highlights of our trip was taking a guided Ghost Tour, where we wandered candlelit streets while hearing centuries-old tales of unexplained events, haunted buildings, and the people who once called Williamsburg home.
Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, the storytelling alone makes it well worth the experience.
Virginia’s Most Haunted House
If your family enjoys a little mystery, don’t miss the Peyton Randolph House, widely considered one of Virginia’s most haunted homes.
Over the years, countless visitors have reported strange sounds, mysterious figures, and unexplained happenings inside the historic home. Whether you’re a skeptic or a believer, the stories surrounding the house add another fascinating layer to Williamsburg’s already rich history.

One of the most memorable evenings of our trip was dinner At Christiana Campbell’s Tavern. Often said to have been George Washington’s favorite restaurant since he was documented to have visited 96 times, Christiana Campbell’s specializes in colonial-inspired seafood dishes served in an intimate candlelit setting. The experience feels authentic from the moment you walk through the door.

Dining in these taverns is as much a part of the Williamsburg experience as visiting its historic buildings.
Why We’ll Be Back
Some destinations are fun. Others are educational. Very few manage to be both without sacrificing either experience. Colonial Williamsburg does exactly that.
Watching our boys ask questions about history, explore workshops, interact with interpreters, and genuinely become excited about America’s beginnings reminded me why travel can be such a powerful teacher. We left with far more than photos. We left with conversations we’ll continue having for years.
