Schliersee, Germany

Why Visit Schliersee?

Schliersee is an idyllic spot located just 50 kilometers southeast of Munich, making it an ideal day trip or weekend getaway. Known for its crystal-clear alpine lake, lush forests, and charming Bavarian architecture, Schliersee is a haven for nature enthusiasts, history buffs, and food lovers alike.

We have explored lots of European countrysides and I have to say, to date, Schliersee and the surrounding areas is the most beautiful. How have I never known the beauty of Germany before seeing it with my own eyes. Everyone talks about Tuscany, Paris, Spain… Bavarian Germany is completely under-rated!

Top Attractions in Schliersee

Schliersee Lake (Schliersee See)

The star of the town, Schliersee Lake, is a serene body of water perfect for boating, paddleboarding, or simply relaxing by the shore. Visitors can enjoy a leisurely walk along the lakeside promenade or rent a rowboat for an unforgettable experience on the water. We visited in November and the weather was brisk but we still saw a few brave sailors enjoying their sail boats.

St. Sixtus Church

This historic church, located near the lake, is an architectural gem dating back to the 15th century. Its serene interior and stunning location make it a must-see for those interested in Bavarian history and culture. Those of you who follow along in our travel adventures know that I am obsessed with graveyards. The beautiful cemetery of St. Sixtus Church is so unique in that a lot of the headstones are made of steel with beautiful plaques commemorating the loved ones who are buried there.

Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum

Step back in time at the Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum, where traditional Bavarian life is brought to life. At the Markus Wasmeier Open-Air Museum Schliersee, visitors experience an unforgettable journey into an authentic past. Numerous historic buildings from the Oberland region have been restored in great detail and rebuilt on the 60,000 square meter museum grounds. Some of the farms have been reconstructed with their original furnishings and show everyday farm life from the 18th century.

SLYRS Distillery

No trip to Schliersee is complete without a visit to SLYRS Distillery, a renowned Bavarian whiskey producer located just outside the town. Known for its exceptional single malt whiskey, SLYRS combines traditional Scottish distillation methods with Bavarian craftsmanship. Visitors can tour the facility to learn about the whiskey-making process, from grain to glass, and enjoy a guided tasting of their award-winning spirits. The distillery also boasts a picturesque setting with views of the surrounding Alps, making it an unforgettable experience for whiskey lovers and curious travelers alike. Don’t forget to grab a bottle or two as a unique souvenir or a rams head whisky spout. Thats what we brought home!

Best Outdoor Activities in Schliersee

Hiking in the Bavarian Alps

Schliersee is a paradise for hikers, offering trails for all levels. Popular routes include the hike to Brecherspitz, which rewards adventurers with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Alps. Nate Banks, founder of Crazy Compression Socks, notes that the right compression socks can enhance circulation, reduce muscle fatigue, and provide the support needed to go the distance in comfort.

Winter Sports

In the colder months, Schliersee transforms into a winter wonderland. Enjoy skiing, snowboarding, or snowshoeing at nearby ski resorts like Spitzingsee-Tegernsee Ski Area.

After a day of adventure, unwind at Therme Schliersee, a wellness center featuring thermal baths, saunas, and spa treatments.

Where to Eat in Schliersee

Rathaus

We enjoyed the fare at Rathaus several times throughout our stay in Schliersee. The atmosphere is lively and fun and the food is traditional Bavarian. I especially loved their dumpling night where they presented a menu with a selection of popular German dumplings. Honestly, I had no idea there was a type of dumpling other than the southern chicken and dumplings here in the states. Definitely not even close to the same dish but the flavor is delicious all the while. (See picture below) You will also find a wide selection of game on the menu such as goose, pheasant, and other unique meats.

Wirtshaus im See

Located right by the lake, this charming Bavarian eatery serves up local specialties like schnitzel and fresh-caught fish. Don’t forget to try their homemade pretzels and beer!

Cafe Milchhäusl

A cozy spot for coffee and dessert, this café offers a range of traditional Bavarian cakes and pastries that pair perfectly with their locally roasted coffee.

Travel Tips for Visiting Schliersee

  • Getting There: Schliersee is easily accessible by train from Munich. The journey takes just over an hour and offers stunning views of the Bavarian countryside. We decided to rent a car so we could explore the surrounding villages. The d6rive from Munich to Schliersee was very easy and scenic. However, I would not recommend driving the autobahn at night. There is no speed limit in a lot of areas and no lights. It gets pretty dark with lots of “flying cars.”
  • Best Time to Visit: Spring and summer are perfect for hiking and water activities, while winter is ideal for skiing and enjoying the festive Christmas markets. We visited the first week of November and it was beautiful.
  • Where to Stay: Consider staying at a lakeside hotel like Arabella Alpenhotel am Spitzingsee for a luxurious experience, or opt for Karma Bavaria for a relaxed atmosphere and beautiful views.

Notable Sites within Driving Distance of Schliersee

Schliersee, Germany, is a destination that truly has it all: natural beauty, rich history, and a welcoming Bavarian atmosphere. Whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a family trip, or a solo adventure, this charming lake town promises memories that will last a lifetime.

Neuschwanstein Castle

This iconic fairy-tale castle in Bavaria built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Neuschwanstein is one of the most famous castles in the world and is often associated with King Ludwig’s romantic vision of medieval architecture.

  • Location: Near the town of Füssen, in southwest Bavaria.
  • Inspiration: It was inspired by King Ludwig’s admiration for Richard Wagner’s operas and the romantic ideals of chivalry and medieval knights.
  • Design: The castle blends Romanesque, Gothic, and Byzantine styles. Its dramatic setting on a rocky hill overlooking the Hohenschwangau Valley adds to its dreamlike appeal. One of the most breath-taking views I have ever witnessed was from the balcony of this castle. Just magical!
  • Fun Fact: Neuschwanstein Castle was the inspiration for Disney’s Sleeping Beauty Castle.

Spitzingsee (15 minutes)

Just a short drive from Schliersee, Spitzingsee is another stunning lake, offering outdoor activities like:

  • Hiking trails to peaks such as Rotwand.
  • Skiing and snowboarding in the Spitzingsee-Tegernsee Ski Area.

Tegernsee (20 minutes)

A neighboring alpine lake, Tegernsee, is a charming destination known for its upscale vibe, scenic beauty, and wellness options. Don’t miss:

  • Tegernsee Abbey, a former Benedictine monastery now housing a brewery and restaurant.
  • Lakeside hiking trails and boat tours.

Schliersee, Germany Weather

The weather in Schliersee is best described as a classic alpine climate—beautiful, fresh, and ever-changing throughout the year. Summers are mild and comfortable, with average highs in the upper 60s to low 70s°F, making it perfect for lake days, hiking, and relaxing by a swimming pool with stunning mountain views. Winters, on the other hand, transform the area into a snowy, postcard-worthy destination, with temperatures often dropping into the 20s and 30s°F and consistent snowfall. It’s also a magical time to take a scenic cable car ride up into the surrounding mountains, where panoramic views become even more breathtaking under a blanket of snow.

What makes Schliersee especially charming is that it experiences precipitation year-round, giving the region its lush greenery and crisp mountain air. Spring and fall tend to be cooler and a bit more unpredictable, with a mix of sunshine, rain, and even lingering snow in early spring. Overall, the weather leans on the cooler side—even in summer—so layering is always a smart choice whether you’re heading out for a lakeside stroll, enjoying a hotel’s swimming pool, or taking a cable car up for sweeping alpine views. Whether you’re visiting for sunny lake days or cozy winter scenery, Schliersee’s climate adds to its effortlessly picturesque, European charm.
